Frequently Asked Questions

Life is full of challenges, but seeing a therapist should not be one of them.

Below are questions I receive regularly from new and existing clients. Please contact me if you want to discuss any of them further or have questions of your own.

What is a therapist?

A therapist is some one who can help offer different ways of looking and dealing with issues.  A therapist can bring insight, education and tools to the table to solve problems.

Aren't all therapists the same?

Absolutely not.  Every therapist is unique and will have his or her own style.  Compatibility with a therapist is a critical component to the success of the treatment.

Are there different types of therapy?

Yes there are many different types of therapy.  Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and relational therapy are all different types of therapy.  I use pieces of all of these different types of therapy when treating a client.

I am not comfortable telling someone about certain things.......

This is normal - but for therapy to work, there has to be transparency between a client and a therapist.  Naturally some people are more comfortable sharing  their feelings and emotions than others.  For others, it takes time to establish a rapport with a therapist and as that develops, so will the therapeutic benefits.

Therapy won't help me......

I hear this all the time.  Therapists are not miracle workers, but they are problem solvers.  As a therapist, my job is to help clients work through issues.  Not every issue can be solved.  Sometimes it is about learning to cope with an issue.  Other times it is about providing a client with the tools or resources to overcome a problem.  The key to either of these scenarios is the clients desire and willingness to change.

What if you can't help me?

As a professional, my job is to do whatever I can to help clients achieve your goals.  Sometimes clients require services which I do not provide, for example intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) or in-patient services.  I can recommend options to clients and help them transition into and out of these services or work in conjunction with other providers to provide therapy.  I have a strong network of contacts in the area, including specialists, hospitals, clinics, social service agencies, and other therapists.   Together we can find the right method and place of treatment for each client.

What are your hours?

I see clients in the afternoon and early evening Monday through Friday.

What insurance do you accept?

While I do not direct bill insurance companies, I will gladly work with clients to help them file the required reimbursement paperwork.

Who is your typical client?

I do not have a "typical" client.  My clients vary widely in age, race, sex, socio-economic and other demographic characteristics as does their reason for coming to see me.

Are you taking new clients?

Yes
